Unity

Translucent shapes overlap and hold each other in place. Painted in 2026, the series looks at the places where separate lives meet and mix — family, memory, the color that only appears where two things overlap.

In the studio

Two canvases at a time, most mornings.

Layers go down thin and wait. What happens between them — the olive that turns gold under pink, a line that survives three coats — decides where the painting goes next.

About

Julia Devon Cohen

Julia Devon Cohen is an artist, designer and art director based in the Tampa Bay area.

Her love of art began in high school, painting her lunches away in the art room. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, School of Design, she spent the bulk of her career as a designer and art director at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. She left Hallmark after many years for more time with her family and to pursue an art career. Julia recently moved to the Tampa Bay area with her husband and three children.

Inspired by the simple moments of everyday life, her paintings capture the untold stories of colorful objects. She reveals their personalities in blunt pencil tips and wayward pink petals — tokens of a messy, art-filled afternoon, or a bouquet too soft for little fingers to resist a touch. Each object stands for a memory, a glimpse into family life and the precious shared moments in time.

The work is bright and colorful, at home in a playroom, a game room or an office. Her paintings have been featured and awarded in several regional exhibitions. Making the work, and sharing it, is what keeps her at the easel.
